About the Catholic Engaged Encounter

The Catholic Engaged Encounter is a Ministry of the Catholic Church oriented to the preparation and accompaniment of engaged couples on their relationship of courtship and future married life based on Sacramental principles and Catholic Christian values.

Founded in the United States in 1974, it receives thousands of engaged couples every year around the world. This ministry is made up of Sacramental Marriage couples and Priests committed to serve in the apostolate with the engaged couples and married couples in their first years of marriage. Their work begins with a retreat experience called "Weekend" and continues with an accompaniment to the engaged and newly married couples in groups called “communities”, through the program "Walking together." In this process the engaged couples discover, in deep dialogue, if they really are suitable for Marriage Sacrament in the Catholic Church.

From the apostolic exhortation "Familiaris Consortio" (The family in modern times), Saint John Paul II highlights the need for young people to prepare themselves for marriage and family life, specifically for accompanying young families. Since then, this call has been widely discussed in forums and documents. Pope Francis takes up the preparation of the couple and the accompaniment of marriages in the apostolic exhortation "Amoris Laetitia", emphasizing that "it is essential to accompany the first years of married life to enrich and deepen the decision conscious and free to belong and love each other to the end ".
